National Center For Health Equity has been a partner with the National Institute of Health for over a decade to help promote National Minority Health Month in New York City.
National Minority Health Month is observed throughout the entire month of April 2026. Established to raise awareness about health disparities affecting racial and ethnic minority populations, the month-long observance encourages action through health education, early detection, and disease management.
2026 Focus and Themes.
While the official national theme from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) typically centers on advancing health equity, specific 2026 initiatives include:
Core Theme: The overarching goal remains “Be the Source for Better Health,” focusing on how cultures, communities, and connections impact overall health outcomes.
Social Drivers of Health (SDOH): 2026 programming emphasizes addressing non-medical factors such as food access, transportation, housing, and social support that disproportionately affect minority communities.
Preventive Priorities: Organizations are highlighting the prevention of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension, which see significantly higher death and prevalence rates in African American, Hispanic, and Native American populations.
